Seeing a BBC request in my inbox last week was pretty exciting. The singer, John Legend had tweeted to his 12.4 million followers that he was going to learn to swim and was taking himself off to an adult swimming lesson. A social media frenzy ensued, and the BBC were keen to get a story out that day according to reporter Lauren Turner, and could I contribute?
As a swimmer and sport psychologist, my website had drawn the BBC’s attention. Could I please give a ‘sport psychologist’s viewpoint’ about the reasons why adults avoid learning to swim? Could I do it right now, over the phone with no delay, so the story could go out in the next hour? ‘Okay’ I said with a deep breath, and here’s the result:
